Expanded Mesh Object #2

Description

These “Expanded Mesh Objects” are a playful exploration of a technique I discovered and focused on the past one and a half years. By making my own custom expanded metal mesh, I turn the technical concept of an industrial material into a unique craft. Through experimenting with different shapes and stages of expansion, I create abstract bodies with a complex structured yet transparent surface wrapped around the inside volume.

The intricate cut pattern was designed in CAD and made possible through CNC water-jet cutting. Expanding the flat steel sheets into the third dimension was made by hand, using different tools for hammering and bending the metal. The final piece is assembled from several parts through welding, followed by heat colouring.
