Expanded Mesh Object #5

Description

These “Expanded Mesh Objects” are a playful exploration of a technique I discovered and focused on the past one and a half years. By making my own custom expanded metal mesh, I turn the technical concept of an industrial material into a unique craft. Through experimenting with different shapes and stages of expansion, I create abstract bodies with a complex structured yet transparent surface wrapped around the inside volume.

The intricate cut pattern was designed in CAD and made possible through CNC water-jet cutting. Expanding the flat steel sheets into the third dimension was made by hand, using different tools for hammering and bending the metal. Finally, the pieces are heat coloured.
